douglas-fir
1: a distinct species of tree (not actually a fir!), also known as oregon pine, british columbian pine, alpine hemlock, red fir and douglastree. these trees grow best in well-aerated, deep soils, such as those found on the oregon coast. the trees, which can grow to more than 270 feet in height on the coast, can be identified by the distinctive three-forked bracts between the scales on their cones, and their flat, fragrant and soft needles.
